Hoodoo Hex - Simplified

Hoodoo Hex weave is one of those weaves that you either get, or you don't when you first try learning it. Personally, it has been my nemesis for a long while, and until recently, I gave up trying to figure it out.

Then came Lisa Ellis, Owner of The Armorers Wife (https://www.etsy.com/shop/thearmorerswife). Provided here is instructions and photos on how to successfully start and expand Hoodoo Hex weave, as given by Lisa Ellis, with minor edits and commentary from myself.

Use a piece of card stock with a couple of holes punched in it to help, or use a MailleCard from West Coast Chainmail (http://www.chainmaildude.com/store/maillecard).

Aspect Ratio for this weave is between 2.8 and 3.5. The size that I have been using, and that is used in this tutorial, is 18 SWG 9/64". I will possibly add more ring sizes at a later date.

Start like this.

Add a ring to each side such that you make a right leaning Mobius on the right side and a left leaning Mobius on the left side.

Take a ring and grab a ring from both the left Mobius and the right Mobius, such that the un-grabbed rings pop up to the top.

Add two rings, one through each of the two eyes you've just created.

Add two rings, one on each side Now we're repeating the sequence.

Make your two Mobius units, right leaning on right, left leaning on left.

Getting the "wings."

1. Turn the unit upside down, the rings fall into place (correct placement for next set of mobius rings)

2. Unit is right side up LEFT (turquoise) ring goes over and around the outer ring.

3. Right side up Mirrored Right Side ring, again the ring goes over and around the outer ring.

4. Upside down, the turquoise rings are now ready to be linked (joined, connected).

5. and 6. Upside down and right side up connected mobius rings. The silver rings have "popped up" and out to the side of the strip.

You may choose to any or none of them as you like.

Grab one ring of each Mobius, just like we did before. Then we'll put rings through the eyes, extend, make Mobiuses, grab, etc etc.

This next part explains how to add additional rows onto what we have already started, so if it seems like it kind of picks up in the middle, it is because it's easier to show when there is already something to go off of.

We add new rows in two passes. First pass we connect the wings, next pass we add new wings. Here's my starting piece, I'll be adding onto the right.

Add a ring to the first wing.

Connect that ring to the next wing with a new ring.

Add a new ring through the eye you just created.

Join to the next wing, go through the eye, etc etc etc until you get to the bottom. From there, you would add the new wings, by placing them through eyes. Fun!

As you can see, it's a fairly easy weave once you get the hang of it. Hopefully the more fluid layout was helpful to you. Happy weaving!
